Georgia exclusions follow each person’s income ownership
Use Georgia’s 2026 4.99% rate and current deduction, then apply each qualifying person’s own retirement exclusion.
Georgia’s retirement exclusion is individual: qualifying people aged 62–64 or disabled under 62 have one limit, and people aged 65 or older have a larger limit. Social Security is outside the exclusion worksheet. Each person can use only their own eligible income against their own room; unused spouse room is not a pool available to the higher-income recipient.
The state worksheet below uses the current 2026 rate of 4.99% and standard deductions of $15,000 for the supported nonjoint statuses or $30,000 jointly. It keeps pensions, eligible taxable account distributions and earned income by owner. Up to $5,000 of earned income per eligible person can use exclusion room. Other qualifying investment income, military rules and residence allocations require the official worksheet.
With $100,000 of eligible pension income owned by one spouse aged 65 or older, the other spouse’s unused exclusion cannot absorb the balance. Under the illustrated joint standard-deduction assumptions, $65,000 is excluded, $30,000 is deducted and $5,000 remains taxable, producing $249.50 before credits. Split the same pension equally between two qualifying owners and that exclusion calculation changes.
Enter taxable pension and distribution amounts after approved contribution basis. Check standard-deduction eligibility, especially a married-separate return when the other spouse itemizes. A partially qualifying account, unknown disability status or a part-year move needs preparation rather than a guessed exclusion. Compare Georgia’s resulting liability with another state’s completed amount, keeping Social Security’s independent federal taxability in view.
