Florida retirement tax figures and sources
| Rule | Florida figure | Effective | Primary source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Income tax on residents (Social Security, pensions, IRAs, wages) | None: the state may not levy it | Florida Constitution, Art. VII, §5(a), adopted 1971 | Florida Constitution, Article VII |
| Estate and inheritance tax | Barred beyond the amount allowed as a credit or deduction against a similar federal or other-state tax | Same section | Florida Constitution, Article VII |
| Federal tax on the same income | Up to 85% of Social Security, and the taxable part of pensions and IRA withdrawals | Every year | IRS Publication 915 |
Worked example: a Florida retired couple’s whole income-tax bill
A married couple, both 67, receive $48,000 of Social Security and withdraw $40,000 from a traditional IRA. Florida takes nothing, so the site’s federal worksheet gives their full 2026 income-tax bill:
| Provisional income ($40,000 + half of $48,000) | $64,000 |
|---|---|
| Taxable share of Social Security | $23,000 |
| Federal deductions: $32,200 standard + $1,650 × 2 age 65 + $6,000 × 2 senior deduction | −$47,500 |
| Federal taxable income | $15,500 |
| Federal tax (10% bracket) | $1,550 |
| Florida income tax | $0 |
Total income tax: $1,550 on $88,000 of retirement cash. The senior deduction runs from 2025 through 2028 and phases out above $150,000 of joint modified AGI; a Roth withdrawal that is qualified would lower the federal figure further.
Federal figures: IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 (2026 deductions and brackets) · IRS: deduction for seniors · IRS Publication 915.
A Florida retirement move still needs a former-state review
Florida does not impose individual income tax on ordinary retirement benefits. That does not eliminate federal tax or every former-state obligation.
Florida’s constitution restricts taxation of natural persons’ income. An ordinary resident receiving Social Security, pensions or IRA distributions has no Florida individual income tax on those receipts. The retirement-only zero-state mode reflects that scope. It is not an estimate of property tax, insurance costs, sales taxes or the federal tax on the same income.
Keep the federal pension and benefit records even when the Florida column is zero. A traditional-plan withdrawal may be taxable federally, while a qualified Roth distribution may not be. After-tax contribution basis can also reduce the federal taxable amount. These classifications are prepared before the ordinary-income worksheet; changing residence does not itself convert a taxable account into a qualified Roth account.
A snowbird comparison needs more than a mailing address. Document where domicile remained, when a genuine change took place and what income another state can still tax under its source and resident rules. The absence of Florida income tax does not resolve that other state’s filing obligation. Retain the former state’s completed return or estimated liability as the amount to compare.
For a simple full-year Florida retirement household, combine the zero Florida amount with the federal worksheet’s result. If the payment mix changes between scenarios, recalculate provisional income and approved deductions rather than carrying a fixed Social Security percentage forward. A home purchase or property exemption is a separate budget calculation and should stay outside the state income-tax field.
Prepare these Florida records
- Confirmed Florida domicile and residence dates
- Former-state source / part-year liability
- Federal pension basis and benefit taxability

Calculate the federal portion separately
Use the federal retirement-tax worksheet to prepare federally included benefits and ordinary income. Its federal deduction and rates do not replace the Florida rules above.
Compare Florida with nearby states
Alabama and Georgia are Florida’s only neighbors. Tennessee is one state further away, chosen from those states for the treatment of Social Security, pensions, IRA withdrawals and wages closest to Florida’s. Alaska borders no state and lists Florida among its comparison states. Run each one’s worksheet with the same household figures before deciding where a move would leave you.
