Keep federal retirement tax separate from Alaska’s other taxes
Alaska has no individual state income tax on ordinary resident retirement income. Federal benefits and pension rules still apply.
Alaska’s individual income tax was repealed. An ordinary resident’s Social Security benefits, pension payments and IRA distributions therefore do not produce an Alaska individual income tax bill. This state result does not decide whether those distributions are federally taxable, whether contribution basis is recoverable, or whether an additional federal distribution tax applies.
The zero-state mode is useful for a household living entirely on retirement benefits. Confirm the income category before selecting it: business activity, another state’s source income and a change of residence need their own review. A property assessment, municipal sales tax or another Alaska charge must not be entered as individual income tax merely because it is part of the household budget.
Consider an Alaska retiree receiving Social Security alongside taxable traditional-plan withdrawals. Enter the benefits and prepared non-benefit income in the federal worksheet. The program works through the benefit thresholds before applying ordinary federal rates. Increasing the withdrawal can change federal benefit taxability while the scoped Alaska state amount stays zero; those are different calculations with different starting figures.
For a relocation comparison, retain the same annual cash-income definition on both sides. Obtain the former state’s final resident or part-year liability and compare it with the Alaska retirement-only state amount. Federal tax may also change if the payment mix changes, so a comparison that substitutes qualified Roth cash for taxable IRA income needs a new federal worksheet rather than an unchanged benefit percentage.

Calculate the federal portion separately
Use the federal retirement-tax worksheet to prepare federally included benefits and ordinary income. Its federal deduction and rates do not replace the Alaska rules above.
Compare Alaska with nearby states
Alaska borders no other state; these destinations also levy no individual income tax on ordinary retirement income. Run each one’s worksheet with the same household figures before deciding where a move would leave you.
