South Dakota retirement income has no individual state income tax
An ordinary South Dakota resident’s retirement income has no individual state income-tax layer, while federal tax remains.
South Dakota does not impose an individual state income tax. For an ordinary resident receiving Social Security, pensions and IRA distributions, the scoped state amount is zero. That result is different from an exemption worksheet in a state that first taxes individual income and then removes an eligible pension. No private-plan subtraction limit is being inferred here.
The federal account and benefit rules still decide the federally taxable amounts. Preserve contribution basis, qualified Roth status and the taxable portion of traditional-plan payments. These details affect the federal worksheet even when the South Dakota state column is zero. A gross distribution should not be substituted for prepared taxable ordinary income simply because no state return is required for that income.
A retiree comparing an annual IRA payout with a larger one can use the same zero-state retirement mode but must update the federal inputs. Taxable Social Security depends on the federal provisional-income calculation, not on South Dakota’s absence of income tax. Carrying forward a fixed benefit percentage would conceal a change that occurs entirely at the federal level.
If residence changed during the year, obtain the former state’s applicable return and any continuing source-income calculation. Domicile evidence and payment dates matter to that separate obligation. Keep property taxes and other household spending outside the individual income-tax comparison. The prepared-liability alternative remains available when the intended scope includes a separately verified tax amount beyond the simple ordinary-resident retirement case.
