Nebraska resident retirement worksheet

Use the year income is received, not the filing year. Later years use a separately approved assessment until the next return rules are verified.

Prepare positive federal AGI after OTHER current Nebraska modifications and state basis, before only the displayed included benefits / pensions / owner premiums and deduction. Qualifying plan classification, contribution basis, survivor rights and exemption ownership must be approved. Basic deduction assumes approved unrestricted standard eligibility; a filer claimed by another taxpayer, separate-spouse exception or restricted deduction needs prepared mode. Federal conformity adjustments, capital netting / losses, negative-income cases, part-year / mixed residency, nonresident source allocation and other special taxes / credits require separate preparation.

An approved surviving-spouse status uses the wide estimate schedule and standard base, but no living spouse age / blindness addition. Separate-spouse exemption and deduction exceptions use prepared mode. Status changes require new approval of actual exemption count and return allocation.

Positive federal-AGI-based income after other approved current-year state additions / subtractions and basis, before only the displayed receipts / premiums / deduction. Includes ordinary private pensions, IRA withdrawals, taxable FERS/TSP and other taxable income. Do not start with federal taxable income.

Only the amount still present in the starting base; fully deductible from 2024 without the old AGI ceiling. Railroad Social Security-equivalent receipts belong in the separate railroad amount so a distribution is never counted twice.

Actual taxable RRB receipts, including eligible Tier I/Tier II, sickness / unemployment and related current instruction categories, still in the base. Approve source and do not duplicate SSA or already federally excluded amounts.

Approved qualifying periodic military retirement attributable to actual uniformed service, still in the base. OPM payment records must distinguish military from civilian service. Coast Guard/eligible USPHS/NOAA sources need actual documents; ordinary survivor or private rollover receipts are not automatically qualifying military pension.

Actual qualifying Civil Service Retirement System component earned for federal-government employment, after basis. Ordinary FERS and TSP do not qualify. A mixed CSA account beginning 8 needs the actual OPM split; do not deduct the entire annuity or duplicate military service amounts.

Approve each actual payer’s full-time certified law-enforcement / professional-firefighter service of at least 20 years and age 60 or older, actual premiums paid and documentation. Only premiums that have not already reduced federal income qualify. Enter the combined independently approved amount; Medicare or any retiree premium is not automatically eligible.

Basic amounts are $8,850 single / separate, $12,950 head and $17,700 joint / qualifying survivor. Age 65/legal-blindness additions are $2,050 per condition for single / head, $1,700 for married/survivor owners. Basic mode does not infer a dependent-filer cap or separate-spouse exception. Prepared mode replaces the full deduction and adds no automatic standard amount.

Current resident instructions require Nebraska standard when federal standard is used. If federal itemized, compare the Nebraska standard with actual eligible federal itemized deductions after removing state/local INCOME taxes and other current restrictions. Federal QBI / senior / other deductions do not become a second automatic Nebraska standard deduction.

Used only if federal itemized and basic mode. Prepare actual ScheduleA amount after excluded state/local income taxes and current limitations; property/sales taxes are not blindly removed as income taxes.

Each allowed actual person gives a 176 credit, not an income deduction. Approve taxpayer/spouse ownership and federal child/dependent-credit eligibility; a filer claimed by someone else cannot automatically claim their own unit. Do not add a spouse or dependents merely because of a filing label. Recheck after status change.

Actual eligible federal tax amount, not distribution proceeds. Nebraska adds 29.6% of these qualifying Form 4972 / early-distribution taxes. Do not insert all federal income tax, all Form 5329 penalties, required-minimum-distribution excise tax or unrelated federal taxes.

After modeled personal-exemption credit: prepare current actual eligibility, restrictions and ordering. Do not duplicate personal units or include refundable credits, withholding / estimated payments. Foreign-adversarial-company and other statutory restrictions require separate review.

Tax year 2026: actual Form 1040N-ES (agency’s 2025 folder) verifies four printed bands at 2.46%, 3.51%, 4.55% and 4.55%; standard deductions $8,850 / $12,950 / $17,700; age and blindness additions $2,050 / $1,700; personal credit $176. Current statutes separately verify benefit, military and CSRS deductions plus 29.6% of approved federal distribution taxes. Continuing 2025 instructions verify eligibility and ownership. Nebraska Social Security exemption and 2026 retirement tax estimates

Nebraska exempts included Social Security for 2026. Estimate retirement tax with verified brackets, military/CSRS exclusions, state deductions and credits.

Nebraska does not tax the Social Security benefit amount included in federal adjusted gross income in 2026. The full subtraction has applied since 2024, without the old federal-AGI ceiling. That is different from saying all retirement income is exempt. Private pensions, ordinary IRA withdrawals, FERS annuities and TSP distributions generally remain in the state’s income base unless another approved deduction applies. Begin with federal-AGI-based income after other independently prepared Nebraska modifications and use only the taxable benefit amount still present in it. Gross Social Security already excluded federally is not subtracted again.

Keep Social Security Administration benefits and Railroad Retirement Board receipts distinct. Nebraska’s continuing resident instructions allow the qualifying federally taxed RRB benefits, including Tier I and Tier II and applicable sickness or unemployment receipts, to be removed. An equivalent railroad benefit already placed in a Social Security amount cannot also be entered as a separate railroad subtraction. Source documents, actual federal inclusion and state contribution basis matter. Negative-income and loss cases that make included receipts exceed the positive prepared base require a separate complete-return calculation.

Actual 2026 Form 1040N-ES verifies four printed estimate bands. Rates are 2.46%, 3.51%, 4.55% and 4.55%; the third and fourth bands now share the same rate. Single or separate thresholds are $4,130, $24,760 and $39,900. Joint and approved qualifying-surviving-spouse thresholds are $8,250, $49,530 and $79,800. Head-of-household thresholds are $7,700, $39,620 and $59,160. The calculator follows the chart’s literal rounded base amounts and inclusive upper boundaries. A printed base can create a penny difference at a transition; it is not replaced with an invented continuous schedule. The booklet expressly restricts this chart to 2026 estimates, so this page does not call it a final-return table.

Uniformed-service retirement benefits have a full qualifying subtraction to the extent included in federal AGI. Approve actual periodic military retirement and the service component. OPM payment records may combine military and civilian service and need documentation of the split. Qualifying Coast Guard, Public Health Service and NOAA retirement may be reported by payors other than the Department of Defense. A government payor or military account name does not automatically exempt ordinary survivor receipts, private rollover funds or unrelated civilian compensation. Keep these amounts separate from the CSRS entry.

Civil-service rules changed before this tax year. Current statute limits the full annuity subtraction to qualifying Civil Service Retirement System income earned for federal-government employment. Ordinary FERS and TSP amounts do not receive that subtraction. The continuing booklet explains the CSA account-number evidence and the special mixed account beginning 8: obtain the OPM Notice of Annuity Adjustment and deduct only its actual CSRS component. Do not deduct an entire mixed annuity because part qualifies. Survivor rights, previously taxed contributions and any military component require their own approval.

Nebraska has its own 2026 standard deduction:$8,850 single or separate, $12,950 head and $17,700 joint or approved qualifying survivor. Age 65 and legal blindness each add $2,050 for an eligible single or head filer and $1,700 for each applicable married or qualifying-survivor owner condition. Only an actual joint return adds a living spouse’s basic age or blindness rights here. A qualifying-survivor label uses the wide base and schedule without creating a living spouse. Separate-spouse exceptions and dependent-filer limits belong in the independently prepared full-deduction method.

The actual federal deduction method affects the state deduction choice. Continuing resident instructions require the Nebraska standard deduction when the federal standard is used. If federal itemized deductions are claimed, compare the approved Nebraska standard with actual adjusted federal itemized deductions after removing state and local income taxes and applying current restrictions. Property or sales taxes are not automatically the same as income taxes. Prepared mode replaces the entire Nebraska deduction, including any restricted standard, itemized or separate-spouse amount; it adds no automatic standard or age amount on top.

Certain retired professional firefighters and certified law-enforcement officers can subtract approved health insurance premiums. Each actual payer must satisfy the age 60 and 20 years of full-time eligible service conditions and retain employer and premium documentation. Premiums already used to reduce federal income cannot be deducted again. Ordinary retiree Medicare or health premiums are not automatically eligible. This tool accepts only the independently approved actual-owner total; the field does not determine whether a specific payment or employment history qualifies.

The 2026 personal exemption is a credit of $176 per allowed actual person, not an income deduction. Prepare the taxpayer or spouse’s rights and actual federal child or dependent-credit eligibility before entering the count. A filer claimed by someone else cannot automatically claim their own unit. Changing filing status requires a new review of that count. Qualifying federal taxes on lump-sum or early retirement distributions create a separate Nebraska tax equal to 29.6% of the approved federal tax amount. Do not enter distribution proceeds, total federal income tax or every Form 5329 penalty. The modeled personal credit reduces total estimated tax and floors at zero.

Other nonrefundable state credits require independently approved eligibility, ordering and current statutory restrictions. Keep refundable credits, withholding and estimated payments outside the nonrefundable reduction field. They affect settlement, not the before-credit liability displayed here. This full-year resident cent estimate does not prepare nonresident or mixed-residency source allocation, all federal conformity modifications, special taxes, contribution basis, capital losses or final whole-dollar return rounding. Use the separate federal worksheet for federal benefit inclusion and liability; a resolved state estimate does not validate an unprepared federal return.
