New Hampshire’s interest-and-dividends tax ended in 2025
New Hampshire repealed its interest-and-dividends tax for periods beginning in 2025; ordinary retirement income has no individual state income tax.
New Hampshire Revenue confirms repeal of the interest-and-dividends tax for taxable periods beginning on or after January 1, 2025. A current retirement comparison should not attach the former tax to interest or dividends simply because an older chart still lists it. Earlier tax periods and their filing obligations remain a separate question.
The retirement-only zero-state mode addresses an ordinary resident individual’s income. It does not prepare New Hampshire business taxes or determine another state’s source or residence claim. Identify the taxpayer, type of activity and actual tax period before treating a state charge as personal retirement income tax. Do not substitute a business return payment for the individual state-liability field.
An illustrative New Hampshire household can receive Social Security, a traditional-plan distribution and investment interest. The federal benefit worksheet still considers the relevant non-benefit income and tax-exempt interest when computing taxable Social Security. Repeal of a state tax does not change that federal inclusion calculation or make a Roth distribution qualified without the required federal conditions.
For a move from another state, retain the old state’s completed resident or part-year liability and compare a consistently defined annual period. A final interest-and-dividends filing for an earlier New Hampshire tax year must not be interpreted as evidence of a continuing 2026 tax. Preserve the period and payment records so the comparison separates prior obligations from the current ordinary retirement-income estimate.
